Stop #4 of Volcom Stone’s Peanut Butter And Rail Jam hit the SoCal snowboarding scene at Bear Mountain, CA on Saturday January 31, 2015.
Bear Mountain is notorious for some of the most insanely nice shred weather of any resort in North America. It’s typical to see riders enjoy sunny 50-degree riding conditions day in and day out. However, the PBRJ brought inclement weather conditions that tested each competitor’s mental toughness as snow and fog filled the contest venue. Luckily the Bear Park Staff had built one of the most creative and rider friendly set ups in PBRJ history. The set up consisted of a closeout to drop rail or rooftop bank gap to down rail in zone 1, a four block/closeout rail with a flat down donkey tube in the middle of zone 2, and a closeout rail to S10 Blazer in zone 3. All areas of the contest site boasted multiple ways of entrance and exit possibilities. This allowed the riders to showcase their creativity as a crowd of 14,000 Bear Mountain patrons cheered them on throughout the day.
Kainoa Pauohau originates from the islands of Hawaii and now shreds at Bear Mountain on the regs. He learned this bs bluntslide 270 out on Friday and brought it to the PBRJ on Saturday. It’s always rad to see progression!
Tommy Olivas came out from Utah to throw down this gap over to lipslide on the down flat rail in zone 2. He kept his tricks fully styled out the entire day and took 3rd place in the 15 & Under Division.
9-Year-Old Anthony Leyva floating a bs 180 over the Blazer in zone 1 as the cameras flash away. He is currently the youngest competitor to qualify for the 2015 PBRJ Championships taking 2nd place in the 15 & Under Division.
Cody Westbrook dusts the snow off his board with a cab 270 fs boardslide from the rooftop box to down rail in zone 1.
Brendon Krainer is a super positive guy that loves to shred. He puts down a 50-50 to lipslide pretzel out combination on the drop rail in zone 1. Coming fresh off a 2nd place finish at Stop #3 of the PBRJ at Mammoth Mountain, Brendon tipped the scales as he captured the win for the 16-21 Division at Bear.
Will Keene gaps from the closeout section of zone 2 and lands a rail clanging disaster lipslide on the flat section of the tube. He also 50-50’d a fellow competitors back in a prior attempt at this very trick. Check out our Instagram page ( @volcompbrj ) for the photo evidence.
10-year-old Riley Rivera was a shining light in the Girls Division as she sent multiple air to Blazer combinations in zone 3. She had the crowd on her side the entire time and she was very entertaining to watch.
Cory Ziel gaps over the closeout with a popped fs 180 into the hood of the Blazer in zone 3. This was her first contest ever and she received 2nd place in the Girls Division.
Veroniqi Hannsen continues to get better year in and year out. She put down multiple tricks on all features including this flexed out bs tail press in zone 2 to earn the top spot in her division.
Lunch is a great time to huddle beneath the tent for food, story telling, and to your share your “True To This” tattoo.
Nick Guin rips a boardslide indy grab and yanks over the closeout into the blazer in zone 3. This was one of our favorite tricks all day because of his commitment and style from beginning to end.
Look how high and far off the rail Jonathan McDonald is on this 50-50 fs 540 out in zone 2. He was the only one that could successfully put this down the entire day. The crew agreed that it was a worth the title of Electric’s $50 “Gooyest Move Of The Event” award.
Buzz Holbrook went wild style to land some of the most electrifying tricks of the event. Here he sends a Mach 1 50-50 front flip over the down flat portion of the zone 2 tube.
