Ty Segall & White Fence

Ty Segall & White Fence: Star Theater Portland, May, 3rd 2012

The night ahead seemed promising for cronies Mertz, Megan and I; we headed to the Star Theater amped on seeing Ty Segall, little did we know we showed up to see three other bands as well. Reassuring the night was going to be good; Youthbitch, Nucular Animals and White Fence revved up the crowd before Ty Segall came on and before I had an unforeseen run-in with some power tripping, gung-ho security guards paired up with an undercover pig wanting to trash my night!

Youthbitch was finishing up a snotty set of adulterated 70s garage-rock; by their last song these guys were dripping with sweat, perhaps beer, who cares – they fucking rocked!  Subsequently, Nucular Animals played an unadulterated set of grunge pop; smooth melodies, heavy bass lines and eerie sounds off the organ, set the tempo for 60s style psychedelic rockers White Fence.

White Fence collected on stage, led by front man Tim Presley and began a distorted super session of dreamy psychedelic rock-n-roll. White Fence has put out three new albums in the past two months; they also collaborated earlier this year with Ty Segall on an experimental project /album called Hair. Check out these diamonds in the ruff albums, they’re definitely worth it. White Fence called it after playing an hours’ worth of raw rock’ n’ roll leading up to Ty Segall.

Ty Segalls style of garage rock is unique and has developed with experience over the last decade. His style and sound is still low budget, full of energy and gritty; the way he can capture the lo-fi sound so effortlessly is unreal. Ty Segall played a great set of old and new tracks, totally cutting loose and having fun with band mates. Tim Presley joined Segall on stage to play some songs off their collaboration album Hair, it was way cool. All-n- all the night kicked ass! Even though I was escorted off the premises by the previously mentioned power tripping kooks, I managed to finagle my way back into the venue to catch the last couple songs Ty played, Oo!! Ty Segall has a new album coming out June 2012 called Slaughterhouse, so check it out; you can preview it on iTunes.
